PortaPack H4M: Two Weeks of Field Testing
I picked up the PortaPack H4M after seeing it mentioned on the SDR subreddit. Here's what two weeks of actual field use looks like.
Display & Controls
The 3.2" IPS panel is genuinely good. 480x800 resolution, readable in direct sunlight. The rotary encoder has satisfying detents. Button layout is logical once memorized.
Battery Life
With the included 3600mAh cell: about 6 hours of mixed use. USB-C charging at 5V/1A means about 4 hours to full.
Reception Performance
Tested against my RTL-SDR Blog V3. The PortaPack is about 2-3 dB less sensitive below 500 MHz, roughly equal from 500 MHz to 1.5 GHz.
GPS & Wardriving
Cold start lock: 28 seconds average. Warm start: under 5 seconds. KML export works cleanly.
Firmware & Community
Running Mayhem 2.1.0. Updates come roughly monthly. The Discord community is active and helpful.
Bottom Line
For $299, the PortaPack H4M is the best all-in-one portable SDR you can buy right now. If you're into radio, this thing is a lot of fun.
